The gloomy January weather did little to dampen the spirits of almost 250 participants and supporters who came together on Sunday 19th January, for the inspiring Spin for Sophie event, hosted by Ivy House in support of the #26forSoph appeal. This fundraising spinathon, lasting an impressive 7.5 hours, showcased the incredible community spirit of Warminster School and raised vital funds for a cause close to many hearts.
The event was dedicated to Sophie Ward (nee Bourne), an OV who has touched the lives of many. After graduating in 2016, Sophie pursued her passion for music at Chichester University and later joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 2020. There, she showcased her talent as a flute and saxophone player, meeting her husband Rich during training. Tragically, in January 2024, at just 26 years old, Sophie was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease after a challenging year of health concerns.
In a show of solidarity, members of the Royal Marines Band Service initiated their own #26forSoph challenges, inspiring everyone to take up their own 26forSoph challenges. Individually, or in small teams, they have completed a challenge of 26 “somethings” for Sophie. Lisa Crinion, Sophie’s former housemistress, and Sophie Saunders, Matron of Ivy House, truly believed Warminster could do something similar and challenged everyone to take part in Spin for Soph. Their vision came to life as our community and the 26forSoph Team rallied together, uniting to honour Sophie’s strength and spirit.
From 10am, participants donned their pink t-shirts and took to the spin bikes in 26-minute intervals, collectively cycling an astounding distance of nearly 1,900 kilometres. The event kicked off with guest spin instructor Mr. Bonnell, who set an energetic tone, followed by exhilarating classes led by Mr Braithwaite and the lovely StudioBelle instructors. The atmosphere was electric, with lively music pumping through the Thomas Arnold Hall sound system and the fantastic Brass Holes Band motivating riders throughout the day with fun tunes to bring the party vibes!
In addition to the spinning, Mr Crinion organised the “Shine for Soph” initiative, where a dedicated team of car washers valeted 26 vehicles (inside and out!), ensuring participants’ cars were sparkling clean despite the chilly weather. The event also featured a cake sale, with an impressive array of baked goods donated by staff, parents, and pupils, adding a sweet touch to the day’s fundraising efforts.
Reflecting on the event, Lisa Crinion expressed her gratitude, saying, “The whole day showcased our amazing Warminster School community at its absolute best! A heartfelt thank you from everyone in Ivy House for supporting.” Sophie Saunders also summed up what the day meant, “Everyone who came to support in whatever guise, thank you. Your support means so much to us, Sophie’s family and friends. We are delighted to report we raised just shy of £4,000, thanks to the incredible efforts of everyone involved.”
Supporters were glued to the JustGiving page watching donations roll in during the event. Ivy House smashed their original £2,000 target and donations will continue to be accepted. If you wish to contribute, no matter how small, please donate and the monies will be put to good use and welcomed by the three charities. Every contribution counts. Donate here.
Funds will be split between the Royal Marines Charity (RMA) (70%), Dorothy House Hospice Care (15%) and Motor Neurone Disease Association (15%)
