Among the four UK schools invited, ten Year 11 pupils from Warminster School proudly represented their community, presenting the results of a year-long research project to an audience of international scientists, space experts, and policymakers.

Their projects covered a wide range of topics — from how satellites help track climate change, wildfires, and sea level rise to exploring sustainable satellite design and the protection of our oceans. Each presentation demonstrated both scientific understanding and genuine enthusiasm for the planet’s future.

The pupils impressed delegates with their confidence and insight, before taking part in a lively Q&A session with CEOS experts. Conversations throughout the day focused on the importance of working together across borders, the need for reliable data, and how innovation in space technology can shape a more sustainable world.

For the pupils, the event was a transformative experience.

“I now value Earth observation as a key area contributing to society,” said Jack Darcy. “A highlight was discussing ideas with people from a wide range of countries,” added Katie Evans. Celin Aubele reflected, “The experts were less cynical than I imagined — they have a lot of hope, and I think that’s very important.”

As the UK Space Agency prepares to hand over the CEOS chairmanship to the Australian Space Agency, organisers hope the Youth Summit will become an annual event, encouraging more young people to explore careers in science and sustainability.

Closing the summit, Dr. Paul Bates, CEO of the UK Space Agency, offered a question that stayed with everyone in the room:

“What gives you hope? And when you know — how will you give hope to someone else?”
