Warminster School was alive with excitement and nostalgia as former pupils, known as Old Verlucians (OVs), returned for the annual OV Day of Sport. Greeted warmly by teachers and old friends, pupils from across the years reunited for a day filled with sports and memories.
The day began with an exhilarating women's hockey match, where members of the first team took to the pitch amidst thunderous applause from OVs. Spectators witnessed a display of skill and determination as the teams battled it out on the field, but the school team was too strong and the girls took the win.
Football took center stage next on the specially converted Byne pitch, evoking memories of past fixtures for many OVs. Despite a red card reducing the school team to 10 men, they secured an impressive 6-1 victory in a match filled with fervent action and teamwork.
On the netball court, OVs and prep school mums joined forces against the school's first and second teams in a friendly yet competitive match. Despite their best efforts, the OVs fell short, but the true victory lay in the camaraderie shared by all players.
As the afternoon progressed, anticipation reached its peak as spectators eagerly awaited the men's hockey match, a highlight of the OV Day of Sport. The air crackled with excitement as the teams took to the field, showcasing their skills and determination.
The match was a testament to the camaraderie and competitive spirit that defines the OV community, with players giving their all. Although the final scoreline may not have fully reflected the intensity of play, it was the school team once again emerging victorious with an impressive 6-1 win.
Following the exhilarating matches, participants and spectators welcomed the opportunity to escape the rain and unwind with a refreshing drink. Amidst conversations and laughter, trophies were proudly handed out to the deserving winners.
The evening culminated in an OV dinner at Boni Hall, where 50 OVs gathered for a night of reminiscence. Amidst laughter and shared stories, old friendships were reignited, and favourite teachers joined in the festivities, creating a truly memorable evening.
We are already looking forward to the next OV Day of Sport, and I think the OVs have begun recruitment early, hoping that some of this years’ leavers will join their sides!
