Professor Goldstein is a particle physicist, primarily involved in the analysis of results from the CERN Large Hadron Collider where he is looking for signs of new physics. Particle physics is the study of the laws of nature at phenomenally tiny scales, and in this talk Professor Goldstein will explain how the largest and most complex scientific experiments ever carried out have helped us to develop a "standard model" of the subatomic world, describe the great successes and the shortcomings of this model, and reveal what deeper secrets nature may hold. So if you have ever wondered about the fundamental nature of everything, how we know what we know, and what we are striving to discover, then this is the talk for you!
